Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano began erupting for the first time since 1984 in Hawaii. According to a USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, The eruption started late Sunday at about 11:30 p.m. HST in Moku‘āweoweo, the summit caldera of Mauna Loa in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
At this time, lava flows are contained within the summit area and are not threatening downslope communities. Winds may carry volcanic gas and possibly fine ash and Pele’s hair downwind.
